Research in my group is aimed at understanding the molecular basis for cellular signaling initiated by cell surface proteins including ion channels, receptors, transporters, and intramembrane enzymes. How did nature come up with the method to mediate chemistry that takes place at the membrane? We try to answer this fundamental question from the perspective of structural biology. We use x-ray crystallography as a tool to obtain atomic structures of our target proteins and various biophysical and biochemical techniques including electrophysiology, isothermal titration calorimetry, fluorescence analysis, and analytical centrifugation to test structure-based functional hypotheses.
